Blackwood’s Maxime Cinema has banned customers wearing suits from screenings of Minions: The Rise of Gru.

The move comes after widespread reports of disruptive teens taking part in a TikTok trend called #gentleminions.

Videos uploaded to the social media platform show large groups of teenagers dressed in suits cheering loudly during the film. The teens are also shown putting their hands together with steepled fingers – like the film’s character Gru.

In a statement posted to its Facebook page, Maxime Cinema said: “Polite notice to guests viewing Minions: The rise of Gru.

“We always welcome everyone to visit our cinemas to enjoy a film. However due to a current trend linked to #Gentleminions, with corresponding disruption and unwarranted behaviour towards our team within screenings of Minions: The Rise of Gru, we highlight that the decision of the management to allow entry into the cinema is final.

“Please be advised that anyone attending Minions wearing formal attire will not be allowed entry into the screening.

“Thank you for your assistance.”

Minions: Rise of Gru is latest movie featuring the popular yellow diminutive henchmen of supervillain Gru. They first appeared in 2010’s Despicable Me and its sequel before getting their own movie focusing on their origin. The latest film tells how Gru became a supervillain.

Film studio Universal has backed those taking part in the trend with a tweet.

Reports of disruptive teenagers in cinemas are nothing new.

The film Rock Around the Clock, released in 1956, was banned by many cinemas in the UK after teenagers watching the film went “wild in the aisles” dancing. There were also reports of police being called after cinema seats were “ripped up”.
