The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has announced that Royal Mail workers will take industrial action over pay on September 28.

A strike was meant to happen on Friday, September 9, but was postpone after the death of The Queen the previous day.

The CWU has said the strike is something they “had not wanted to do” but felt the “stubborn Post Office” left them no choice.

Around 1,600 workers across south east Wales will be on the picket line later next week, with a recent ballot seeing more than 97% of members vote in favour of industrial action.

A spokesperson for the CWU said: “It had not been our intention to call further strikes, but the attitude of the employer, in the context of our need to comply with statutory legislation, left us with no choice.

“We are confident that next week’s strike – the sixth strike of CWU Post Office members – will be as solidly supported as each of the previous actions. And unless there is a serious pay offer, with increased money on offer, then not only will this action go ahead, but we will also begin the process of undertaking a second national strike ballot.”

A postal worker currently earns on average around £380 a week, or just under £20,000 a year.
