Ty’n y Wern’s community bistro was officially reopened by Caerphilly County Borough’s Mayor Liz Aldworth, who is the councillor for the Bedwas and Trethomas ward

Before the pandemic, pupils at Ty’n y Wern Primary School ran a community bistro every week – welcoming residents while completing tasks such as baking, cleaning and handling money.

While this was brought to a halt during Covid, it is now back up and running.

The cafe opens to the public every Wednesday between 1.30pm and 3.30pm, with pupils taking it in turns to run the scheme.

Based in the grounds of the school, which is in Trethomas, the cafe has disabled access and baby changing facilities for visitors.

Caroline ap Hywel, Senior Leader at the school, was involved in launching the project. She said: “We are excited for the relaunch of our Community Bistro, which was going from strength-to-strength before Covid hit.

“We recognise how important it is to get people back together and want the Bistro to be at the heart of our community.”

She continued: “We also plan to us the space as a ‘warm bank’ each morning with free tea and toast, comfy seating and public wifi. Adult Learning Wales will be providing classes for parents and community members with sugarcraft and food safety starting on a Friday in the near future.”

Councillor Carol Andrews, who is Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Education said it was “wonderful to see the relaunch of this fantastic Community Bistro, which children can use as a space to enjoy themselves, integrate and mix with locals from the community.”
