Bargoed 48-8 Maesteg Harlequins, WRU National Championship
Bargoed scored eight tries to record a bonus-point win over Maesteg Harlequins on Saturday, October 8.
The Bulls, having made seven changes to the side that beat Cardiff Met the previous weekend, opened the scoring at Bargoed Park after eight minutes, with Darren Humphries getting onto the scoresheet.
Josh Prosser added the conversion to give Bargoed an early 7-0 lead.
Minutes later, Bargoed’s attack delivered again with the ball reaching Adam Jones, who crossed out wide for his side’s second try of the afternoon, which was converted by Prosser.
But the Quins hit back and reduced the lead with an unconverted try out wide, which cut the lead to nine points after 27 minutes of action.
However, the lead was soon restored when the Bulls intercepted a Maesteg pass, which led to Dylan Williams scoring try number three for Bargoed. Despite the failed conversion, Bargoed found themselves two converted tries ahead – leading 19-5.
The Quins chipped into the Bargoed lead again, this time through a penalty.
Bargoed responded before the interval, with James Leadbeater’s try securing the four-try bonus-point for the hosts after 36 minutes.
That tally was soon extended to five tries as Dylan Williams grabbed his second of the afternoon. Prosser converted to give Bargoed a comfortable 31-8 lead going into the break.
Calum Jones opened the second half scoring around the hour mark, with Prosser converting to increase the lead to four converted tries.
Soon after, a dominant Bargoed scored their seventh try of the game as Leadbeater scored his second of the day in the 68th minute.
The clash was capped off when Tom Rice crossed for the eighth and final try, which was converted by the boot of replacement Steffan Jones to round off a convincing Bargoed victory.
Bargoed sit third in the WRU National Championship table following the win, with four wins in their first five games. The team travel to Ystalyfera on Saturday, October 22 in their next league game.
