Bedwas Workmen’s Hall will host ‘Wales Stands Up’ this Saturday night

Bedwas Workmen’s Hall and Caerphilly’s The Green Lady pub are hosting comedy nights in support of Velindre Cancer Centre this weekend.

The events are being put on as part of Wales Stands Up – which was inspired by the fundraising of Carmarthen-born comedian Rhod Gilbert, who back in July announced he had been diagnosed with cancer.

As part of Wales Stands Up week, which has been running across south Wales all of this week, 23 shows have been arranged with more than 80 comedians and 16 event organisers involved- with the aim of raising £10,000 for Velindre.

It was set up by Ammanford-based comedian and promoter, Gareth Morris, who said: Mr Gilbert’s fundraising work over the years has been nothing less than inspiring.

“I looked to organise what would be a one-off comedy night to raise a couple of pounds for the Velindre Centre, but instead I was met with comedians wanting to support the cause. Within an hour, we had a team of fourteen people planning out a series of shows, all geared towards fundraising for the centre

“It’s been incredible to be part of it.”

Head of Fundraising at Velindre Cancer Centre, Andrew Morris said: “The number of comedians that have got involved in the Wales Stands Up events to show support to Rhod and Velindre at this challenging time really is fantastic.

“We know Rhod will be touched as these events encompass two things he’s extremely passionate about – comedy and raising funds for Velindre.”

Rhod Gilbert's Work Experience has been nominated for its second BAFTA Cymru award

Responding to the fundraising efforts, comic Gilbert, 53, said: “I’ve been absolutely blown away by the many lovely messages of support and I’m thrilled that we can come together to turn this into something so positive for such a remarkable cancer centre.”

The event at The Green Lady pub, on Pontygwindy Road, starts at 9pm on Friday, October 14.

Comedian Phil Cooper will be headlining, with performances from BIG D, Tommy Smith, Scott Adams and Jamie Dykes.

The event is for over-18s only, with an array of raffle prizes up for grabs, including signed rugby memorabilia, a 32-inch television, trampolining sessions and more.

On Saturday, the event moves onto Bedwas Workmen’s Hall, getting underway at 7.30pm. Tickets are available for £5 and can be booked online from the workmen’s hall’s website.
