Gelliargwellt Uchaf Farm near Gelligaer

A blaze at the Bryn Group’s Gelliargwellt Uchaf Farm, near Gelligaer, was extinguished by fire crews over the weekend.

The fire, which was deemed accidental, was reported to South Wales Fire and Rescue Service at around 8.23am on Saturday, October 29.

The Bryn Group has said the fire broke out at its biomass-heated drying floor, which is used to dry animal bedding – but thankfully nobody was hurt.

In a statement, the fire service said: “Crews from multiple Fire and Rescue stations across south Wales attended the scene alongside partner agencies.

“Firefighters used specialist equipment, including ground monitors, hose reel jets and main jets to extinguish the fire.”

The fire was put out by 3.04pm that day, with the property being inspected again as a safety precaution.

Bryn Group director Alun Price thanked fire crews and said: “The affected building is standalone, and some distance from the main materials reclamation facility, which is unaffected by the incident.

“Water used in fighting the fire has been captured in our surface-water collection tanks and has not entered the environment.”

He continued: “We understand that water discolouration in the area reported to Welsh Water is caused by the disturbance of sediment in the mains water system when the fire service uses fire hydrants. Any discolouration will pass very quickly now that the fire engines have disconnected from the hydrant system.”

Mr Price said the building has suffered damage, but its main steel and concrete structure remains unaffected. However, he said it would be checked by engineers.

He added: “We apologise to our neighbours for any inconvenience caused by the resulting smoke, and the commotion of emergency services arriving and working on site.”
