Every year the community of Lansbury Park in Caerphilly get together to enjoy Bonfire Night – except fly-tippers threatened this year’s event by making the bonfire site a free-for-all.

Sofas, mattresses and other waste were dumped alongside the bonfire, but the community pulled together, and with the help of the council’s parks department cleared the rubbish and made the bonfire safe.

Van councillor Elaine Forehead was part of the cleaning effort which happened on November 4.

She told Caerphilly Observer: “Fly-tippers had dumped many van-loads of rubbish. The fire service said it had to be removed.

“A group of residents and children went through it all and moved it to make it safe. We worked all day and the kids were amazing.”

She added: “Fly tipping almost stopped the fun but together we sorted it.”
