Gerwyn Price has won his fifth title of the year after beating rising Dutch star Gian van Veen in the Players Championship 29 final in Barnsley – scooping a £12,000 prize.
World number one Price, from Markham, beat 20-year-old van Veen 8-4 on Friday, November 4 – securing his second ProTour win of the campaign and the 13th of his career.
Price, 37, got his tournament underway with a 6-5 win over Steve West, before defeating Nathan Rafferty 6-2.
At the last 32 stage, Price beat Connor Scutt 6-2, setting up a last 16 clash with Austria’s Rowby-John Rodriguez, which Price won 6-3.
At the quarter-final stage, Germany’s Martin Schindler was swept aside 6-0, before Price booked his spot on the final with a 6-3 semi-final victory over Belgium’s Mike De Decker.
Van Veen meanwhile disposed of Bradley Brooks, Brendan Dolan, Richie Burnett, Alan Soutar, William O’Connor and Dave Chisnall en route to the final.
Price turned on the style against van Veen as the pair traded four consecutive holds to get their tie underway. Price struck the first blow with a 79 checkout to break throw in the fifth leg, before extending his lead after his opponent squandered three darts to level.
Price then followed up with a 115 combination with an 11-dart hold as he advanced towards victory, but van Veen won two consecutive legs to cut the deficit to 6-4.
But Price sealed the win with back-to-back 14-darters, denying van Veen a first ever PDC title.
After his title win, Price praised his opponent and said: “Gian is a fantastic player and I’m sure he will get to many more finals, but thankfully I won this one today.
“I played brilliantly in some games, but in other games I was average. I slipped up a few times early on, but you need a little bit of luck at times.
“I’m feeling confident again, whereas five or six months ago my confidence was so low, and we know this game is all about confidence.
“It was a tough six months for me, but the form is coming back and I’m looking forward to the next few tournaments.”
