Glamorgan Wanderers 0-31 Bargoed, WRU National Championship
Bargoed have moved up to third in the league after comfortably dismantling Cardiff-based Glamorgan Wanderers.
Bargoed scored five unanswered tries in what was their first game since defeat to title contenders Pontypool in November.
Despite tough weather conditions, Bargoed started brightly and got onto the scoreboard after 11 minutes after being awarded a penalty try.
Duane Dyer built on the lead when he scored an unconverted try in the 17th minute.
The bulls looked to have added a third after a dominant spell, but centre Ollie Andrews was ruled offside.
Bargoed continued to pile the pressure on a strong Wanderers defence and were rewarded again in the 32nd minute when scrum-half James Leadbeater scored try number three.
A Steffan Jones conversion added the extras to give Bargoed a commanding 19-0 lead going into the break.
The hosts began the second half strongly and causes problems for Bargoed – but the visitors were resilient and found themselves on the scoreboard once again – No8 Tom Rice crossing for the fourth try to secure a bonus-point.
Jones converted once again to give Bargoed a 26-0 lead on the cusp of the hour-mark.
Bargoed were dealt a blow shortly after when Andrews was sent to the sin bin for ten minutes, reducing the bulls to 14 men.
The Wanderers looked to take advantage of the extra player but couldn’t find a way past a defiant Bargoed defence.
With their kicking game strong, Bargoed managed to get a scrum near their opponents’ try line, leading to Leadbeater scoring his second try – and Bargoed’s fifth – ten minutes from time.
With the game beyond all doubt, ill-discipline struck Bargoed again as Ali Gardiner-Key was sin binned for slowing play in the 79th minute.
Bargoed welcome league leaders Neath to Bargoed Park in their next game, which is being played on Saturday, January 14.
