Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili has reopened today, Monday June 5, following a fire at the school over the weekend -but the nursery class remains shut.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) was called to the school, on Pontygwindy Road, Caerphilly, at around 9am on Saturday June 3.

Multiple fire crews tackled the blaze, which was put out at around 11.40am.

SWFRS said the fire started externally and spread onto the junior school.

A spokesperson for Caerphilly County Borough Council said the impact of the fire is “still being assessed”.

They continued: “We are working closely with the school to survey the extent of the damage in order to consider next steps.

“Initial findings indicate that the cause of the fire was not deliberate and we would like to thank the crews in attendance on Saturday morning for their swift intervention.

“The school will continue to update parents over the coming days as more information becomes available about the way forward.”

Councillor Shayne Cook, who represents the Morgan Jones ward, where the school is located, praised the efforts of firefighters.

Cllr Cook said: “When I heard this terrible news I immediately attended on site alongside my ward colleague Cllr Pritchard to assess the situation.

“If it wasn’t for the amazing efforts of South Wales Fire Service, the fire could have spread and caused further damage to the school.

“I want to publicly thank those brave firefighters who got the fire under control. “
