Tennis courts across Caerphilly County Borough are being renovated thanks to an investment of more than £377,000 from the UK Government and tennis’ governing body.
In total, six tennis court sites will be improved thanks to the funding, which forms part of a UK-wide project to boost participation in the sport.
Which tennis courts are being upgraded?
- Blackwood Showfields;
- Ystrad Mynach Park;
- Morgan Jones Park, Caerphilly;
- Pontymister;
- Rhymney (the Terrace);
- Ynysddu Rec Ground.
All courts will be available to book online via the LTA website.
The investment, which is being overseen by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), will see thousands of existing park tennis courts in poor condition upgraded.
The work started in May and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
In addition to the investment from the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation, Caerphilly County Borough Council is investing more than £135,000 to provide a range of tennis-related activities.
Cllr Chris Morgan, council cabinet member for leisure, said: “The partnership working with the LTA will promote and develop tennis now and for future generations.
“The new facilities will provide more opportunities for our residents to get more active, more often. I am sure the newly renovated public park tennis courts will be well used and enjoyed by all.”
Julie Porter, chief operating officer at the LTA, said: “This investment is part of the UK Government and LTA’s Parks Tennis Project, and will mean that courts will be available for people to use for years to come.
“We will also be working closely with Caerphilly County Borough Council to ensure that the local community have a range of accessible opportunities to get on court, and open up our sport to many more people.”
This article was updated on August 22 to clarify that the courts in Rhymney which are being upgraded are on the Terrace.
