A railway footbridge which closed due to safety concerns nearly two months ago will remain closed for the “foreseeable future,” Caerphilly County Borough Council has said.

The bridge, which goes over the tracks at Caerphilly railway station, was looked at on Monday July 3 as part of a routine inspection.

It was discovered that a number of steps were moving or rocking when stepped on, forcing its closure.

The council has said it is hoping a further inspection can be carried out in early September to “help decide next steps”, but the bridge “must remain closed in the interests of public safety”.

In a Facebook post, the council added: “We are aware of recent incidents where barriers have been removed to gain access to the structure, so we are currently looking at options to increase the security of the site.

“Any unauthorised person accessing the structure could be liable in the event of an incident or accident.”
