Pupils at Ty Sign Primary School in Risca are starting their new academic year tomorrow morning – a week later than planned.
The school was closed all of last week due to building works, despite being due to reopen in time for the new school year.
However, it is now set to reopen on Tuesday September 12.
In a letter to parents last week, headteacher Becky Sims confirmed a risk assessment had been carried out, which deemed it unsafe to open to pupils.
Mark S Williams, corporate director for economy and environment at Caerphilly County Borough Council, apologised to parents in a letter dated September 7.
Mr Williams said: “The council’s works that have been taking place on site had been scheduled to be completed during the summer holidays but have regrettably over run.
“I have today (September 7) been advised that, despite best efforts this week, there is still some remaining work internally and externally that needs to be completed to ensure the building is safe.”
He said contractors would “prioritise the outstanding work” in the days following, ready for the school to reopen on Tuesday.
Islwyn Senedd Member Rhianon Passmore, a former councillor for the Risca East ward where the school is located, said: “It is imperative that our school sites are safe and welcoming learning environments.
“I know the council will ensure this is the case for when the children return. All parents and carers will be written to with the information being clearly communicated to them.”
