As Wales prepared to take on Portugal in their second Rugby World Cup group game on Saturday September 16, clubs across Caerphilly County Borough were in action.
In the WRU National Championship East, the second tier of Welsh club rugby, Bargoed returned to winning ways with a 22-14 derby win away at Penallta, while Bedwas made it two wins from three after beating St Peters 33-27 at home.
However, there was defeat for Newbridge, who fell to narrow 41-40 loss at home to Cardiff Met, and Cross Keys, who were beaten 61-32 away to Ystrad Rhondda.
Down in League One East, Ynysddu saw off Monmouth 18-15 at home, but there was no such success for the rest of the borough teams in that division.
Senghenydd fell 28-20 at home to Abergavenny, Nelson were beaten 32-21 at home to Brynmawr and Risca were dismantled 53-0 away to Talywain.
Meanwhile, there was derby success for Blackwood, who beat Oakdale 39-28 in Division Two East.
There was also a win for Caerphilly over the weekend, beating Llantrisant 34-24 away from home in Division Two East Central.
Dropping down a tier to League Three East, Rhymney beat Fleur de Lys 29-25 in an all-Caerphilly County Borough affair to earn their second league win of the season.
There were also wins for Machen, who beat Llanhilleth 25-20 away, and Abertysswg Falcons, who got their first win of the season after beating Chepstow 13-0.
Meanwhile, Abercarn currently top the division with three wins in three, earning a 20-17 win away to Blaina on Saturday.
Down in League Four East, Crumlin‘s 100% winning record this term continued with a 15-10 win at home to Bettws.
However, there was disappointment for Hafodyrynys, who were beaten at home by Newport Saracens 33-10, while Blackwood Stars lost 19-0 at home to Crickhowell.
New Tredegar’s trip to Gwernyfed was postponed, as was Bedwellty‘s home clash with Whiteheads.
In Division Five East, Hollybush registered their first win of the season with a 17-14 victory away to Beaufort.
Meanwhile, Deri have moved to the summit of Division Six East following a 47-0 away win over Cwmcarn United, while Trinant‘s fixture with Old Tylerian was postponed.
