A samurai sword and an air weapon were found at Bedwas Infant School

Police have said they will be looking into how a samurai sword and an air weapon made their way into Bedwas Infant School last week.

The school was placed under lockdown on Friday September 15 after the weapons were found at the site at around 10am.

Specially-trained firearms officers attended the school as a precaution, but police have said no injuries were reported.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Preston, of Gwent Police, said: “We conducted a search of the school grounds and no further items were found by officers.

“The decision was taken to place the school in lockdown while this search took place in order to keep the children and staff safe from any potential harm.

“Both items were seized by officers and there is no ongoing threat to anyone currently at the school.

“We will be looking into how these two items of concern made their way onto the school grounds.”

A spokesman for the school said: “We can confirm that suspicious items were discovered within the perimeter of the school grounds on Friday morning and the police were immediately notified.

“They have since been in attendance and removed the items.

“No pupils or staff were in any danger at any time and all appropriate procedures were followed.”

Anyone with information that could help Gwent Police’s enquiries can contact the force on 101, or through direct message on Facebook or Twitter, quoting log reference 2300313003.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
