A drug dealer who was caught after a police chase through the car park of Ystrad Mynach Tesco has been jailed for ten years.

Jay Jones, 23, of Pen y Bryn Court, Croespenmaen, was sentenced at Newport Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to being involved in the supply of cocaine, dangerous driving, speeding, and possession of criminal property.

He also pleaded guilty to failing to stop for a police officer.

The police chase happened on November 1, 2022 – with around £100,000 in cash seized by police.

PC Rhys Jones, of Gwent Police, welcomed the sentencing and said: “[Jay] Jones was the head of a sophisticated drugs operation which dealt multi-kilo amounts of Class A and B drugs.

“He made huge profits from the sale of drugs.

“In his attempt to avoid the police, Jones drove dangerously around a busy car park, putting innocent lives at risk.”

PC Jones continued: “The skill and professionalism of our Roads Policing and Specialist Operations (RPSO) officers ensured that no one was hurt as a result of his actions and successfully arrested him, preventing further harm.

“Jones’ main motivation was to make huge amounts of money from his drug dealing enterprise. The significant amount of cash and drugs that was recovered demonstrates the level of criminality he was operating at as a wholesale supplier of cocaine.

“His arrest disrupts the drug supply chain in Gwent.”
