The derby match between rivals Caerphilly Athletic and Aber Valley FC was brought to an abrupt end when fighting broke out – sparking a police investigation.

The two sides met at Ystrad Mynach’s Centre for Sporting Excellence in the South Wales Alliance Premier Division on Saturday December 9.

However, the game was abandoned after tensions boiled over. It is unclear if the fixture will be replayed.

In a statement, Gwent Police said: “We received a call regarding a disturbance in Caerphilly Road, Ystrad Mynach, at around 3.30pm on Saturday December 9, after a group of people were reportedly seen fighting.

“Officers attended and a 59-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged.

“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call us on 101, quoting log reference 2300418323.”

The statement continued: “You can also contact us via social media on Facebook and Twitter or you can report any information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

“It could get mad”: Caerphilly Athletic ready for derby clash against league rivals Aber Valley FC

The South Wales Football Association has said it is “aware the game was abandoned, and we believe it is a police matter”.

A South Wales FA spokesperson said: “We will conduct our own investigation, but we will be guided by the police and would like to place on record that we do not condone any such behaviour.

“We are in contact with the match officials and also in dialogue with the League during this investigation.

“We will be making no further comment on this.”

Aber Valley FC were approached for comment, while Caerphilly Athletic did not wish to comment.
