Derwendeg Primary School in Cefn Hengoed has made the decision to cancel all future fireworks displays after explosions left onlookers running for cover.

The “unfortunate incident” took place on Monday November 6, at the school’s annual fireworks display.

Following a Caerphilly County Borough Council investigation, “no conclusive cause” was found as to why the fireworks exploded only a few metres from the ground.

Fortunately, no injuries or damages were reported.

In a statement, the school said: “We followed the appropriate procedure and notified the council’s health and safety team after the incident and they subsequently carried out an investigation into the matter.

“This process has now been completed, but the findings have not identified any conclusive cause and it seems to have been an unfortunate accident.

“As a result, the school has decided that it will not be holding a fireworks event in the future as the safety and wellbeing of the whole school community is paramount.”
