A handcrafted jewellery and accessories business has secured a permanent unit at Ffos Caerffili, having had a pop-up store at the container-style market over the summer.

Karen L’s Creation opened its permanent unit on Wednesday October 9, having been based in the space run by Welsh ICE between July and August.

Welsh ICE, which is a start-up business hub based on Caerphilly Business Park, has a unit at Ffos Caerffili, which it offers to local traders on flexible 28-day leases. The idea is to provide a stepping stone for businesses, allowing them to gauge market demand.

Crafter Karen Lam, who runs Karen L’s Creations, described opening her permanent unit as a “dream come true”.

She said: “As a small business, I have received the best support from both Welsh ICE and Ffos Caerffili. I’m very grateful for everything.

“I started my crafting/maker business in Wales as a stallholder last year with Crafty Legs Events and Roath Craft Market.

“Discovering the pop-up shop opportunities with Welsh ICE was an eye-opener for me, and I have learned so much.

“This experience has allowed me to envision how I can grow my business. I look forward to running this permanent shop in Ffos Caerffili and showcasing all of my handmade works.”

Rachel Harris, chief creative officer at Welsh ICE, praised Ms Lam’s “dedication to craftsmanship” and said her “unique designs resonate well with the community”.

Ms Harris continued: “The success of the test trading model underscores its potential to revitalise high streets by providing low-risk opportunities for local businesses to gauge market interest and grow.”

Traders interested in the Welsh ICE pop-up shop initiative can contact Georgia Roberts at georgia@welshice.org or visit welshice.org/popup for further information.
