MP Nick Smith (centre) has expanded the scheme into Rhymney

The ‘Everyone Deserves a Christmas’ campaign has seen 25 hampers worth £50 delivered to families most in need around Rhymney.

The initiative, led by Labour MP Nick Smith, who represents Blaenau Gwent and Rhymney, ensures families can have a Christmas meal, as well as other food items.

Rhymney Library has served as the main distribution point for the hampers, ensuring families would receive them in time for Christmas.

Councillor Carol Andrews, cabinet member for education and communities, attended Rhymney Library as Caerphilly Cares staff took delivery of the hampers.

Speaking at the event, she said: “This campaign is a shining example of what can be achieved when communities and organisations come together to support those most in need.

“For many families, Christmas can be a difficult time, and initiatives like this not only provide practical support but also bring comfort and joy during the festive season.”

Mr Smith said: “This has been a big project for us, with packing moving from the Swansea HQ to Merthyr Town Football Club this year. It simply would not have been possible without all the fantastic volunteers who gave up their time to lend a hand.

“I also want to thank the EVI Pantry and Caerphilly Cares teams for helping with the deliveries.”

He continued: “Christmas is an expensive time, and it can be difficult for some in our community. We hope that these hampers will help make it a little easier.”

Mr Smith added that he wanted to thank local businesses that helped out, including Braces Bakery for donating a loaf of bread for each hamper, Platt Packaging in Tredegar for providing boxes and Convatec, Rhymney for their financial donation.
