Plans unveiled for ‘first-class’ replacement primary school

A replacement school building will provide a “first-class educational experience” for pupils at Caerphilly’s Plasyfelin Primary, according to two ward councillors.

The existing school would be demolished in phases to make way for a new 420-place primary, as well as a 60-place nursery, according to plans.

The site, off the town’s Lewis Drive, would also include a new car park, all-weather games area (MUGA) and hard and soft play areas, if the scheme is granted planning permission.

Morgan Jones ward councillors Shayne Cook and Jamie Pritchard, who are also Caerphilly County Borough Council cabinet members, have welcomed the proposals for the school.

“Having campaigned for a new school for many years, we’re pleased to see further progress being made,” they said. “The council has committed to a replacement build, which we believe will offer a first-class educational experience for pupils.

“A wider community use is also something residents have wanted for some time. We encourage residents to offer their views.”

It is expected that education at Plasyfelin Primary will continue through the construction period, if the proposals are successful.

This will involve a “careful phasing of construction works” and the use of temporary classroom buildings as “interim accommodation”, a report by planners The Urbanists shows.

A pre-application consultation on the proposals runs until January 14 – and following that, the council is expected to submit an application for planning permission.
