Art sculptures based on designs from primary school pupils will tour Caerphilly County Borough in the coming months.

This school year, children have been designing their own superheroes and villains as part of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s ‘Recycling Showdown’ campaign.

As part of the campaign, pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili, Ysgol Bro Allta, Park Primary School, Bryn Primary School, and Crumlin High Level Primary School all took part in a series of workshops to learn about the correct ways to dispose of waste.

Artist Jason Hicks and the council’s recycling advisors have been involved in the scheme, which aims to educate youngsters on the importance of recycling – with one eye on the Welsh Government’s goal of becoming a zero-waste nation by 2050.

The characters designed by the pupils were put to a public vote. The top-voted designs will now be cast on to two 4ft art sculptures that will tour Bargoed, Blackwood, Caerphilly, Risca, and Ystrad Mynach.

The top voted hero was Recycle Flower, who was designed by pupils at Park Primary School in Bargoed.

The top voted villain was Colin the Corn, designed by pupils at Crumlin High Level.

The winning pupils have been awarded with a certificate, as well as Love2Shop and Amazon vouchers for their school.

Pupils will also each receive a ‘Top Trumps’ style pack of cards featuring all of the character designs from across the five participating schools.

Councillor Carol Andrews, cabinet member for education, congratulated the pupils for their efforts and said: “This is a great initiative to get our younger residents involved in recycling correctly and I can’t wait to see the designs come to life.”

Details of when the sculptures will be on display will be announced at a later date.
