Proposals to transform an old substation into a beauty salon have won the approval of Caerphilly County Borough Council planners.

Officers have granted planning permission for Denys Cronin to convert the structure off Abertridwr Square, near the Buffs Club.

Planning documents set out designs for a business offering “a range of cosmetic and personal care services to the local community”, reportedly trading as Beauty Box.

Services there could include hair cutting and styling, nail treatments, eyebrow tattooing, and tanning.

During a recent public consultation on the proposals, one objector raised concerns about the name of the new venture “replicating an existing business in the area”.

Makeover proposed for old substation in beauty salon plans

The council’s planning officers said this was “not a material planning consideration” and advised it was not the department’s role “to regulate competition or names of businesses”.

Agents for the applicant said the proposals, if approved, “supports small business development in the local area while revitalising a building that has stood unused for many years”.

Council officers granted planning permission subject to several conditions, including around the opening hours of the proposed business.
