Weather warnings have been issued

“Robust plans” are in place amid snow and ice weather warnings, Caerphilly County Borough Council has said.

Amber and Yellow weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office for Thursday January 8 and Friday January 9 due to Storm Goretti – with the potential for heavy snowfall in northern parts of the borough.

The council said it has 12 gritters available, all of which can be fitted with snow ploughs if required, along with around 9,000 tonnes of grit.

Council staff will “closely monitor” weather forecasts and data from five weather stations located across the borough in Rhymney, Markham, Hafodyrynys, Caerphilly, and Ystrad Mynach.

key routes across the borough, including most bus routes and roads serving emergency services, medical facilities, and key public buildings, will be prioritised for gritting – while 900 grit salt bins are located across the borough, allowing residents to treat roads and pedestrian areas where necessary, the council said.

Council leader Jamie Pritchard said: “Caerphilly County Borough Council is ready for winter.

“We have a significant supply of grit and a fleet of vehicles prepared to deal with ice and snow. Our highways team monitors weather conditions continuously and is ready to respond 24 hours a day.

“Our priority is to keep main routes open and moving, while ensuring support for those who need it most.”
