Residents and visitors will have the chance to explore Caerphilly Castle for free this St David’s Day, as part of a nationwide scheme offering complimentary access to some of Wales’ most iconic historic sites.
To mark St David’s Day on Sunday March 1, Cadw, the Welsh Government body responsible for looking after the castle, is offering free entry to 17 historic places across the country that would normally charge admission.
Caerphilly Castle is included in the offer. However, visitors are being warned that free tickets are limited and must be booked online in advance to avoid disappointment.
Instead of paying an entry fee, Cadw is encouraging visitors to make a voluntary donation to Wales Air Ambulance. While donations are optional, organisers hope the initiative will help support the charity’s lifesaving work.
First Minister Eluned Morgan said the scheme was a fitting way to celebrate Wales’ national day.
“St David’s Day is such an important opportunity for celebrating everything that makes Wales a special nation with our unique identity and culture,” she said.
“Visiting a Cadw site is a fantastic way to celebrate Dydd Gŵyl Dewi and learn more about Wales’ incredible history.”
Wales’ culture minister, Jack Sargeant, said “I am so pleased that Cadw will, again, be giving away free entry tickets for St David’s Day.
“I’d urge anyone interested to book their tickets as soon as possible to avoid missing out.”
Abi Pearce, the Wales Air Ambulance’s corporate partnership manager for south Wales, said visitors could enjoy the celebrations while helping to save lives.
“Since our launch in 2001, we have carried out over 55,000 missions. We could not have done it without the support of the people of Wales,” she said.
