A “flagship” housing development for over-55s on the site of a former care home has officially been opened – with residents set to move into their new homes this week.
The development, on the site of the former Ty Darran care home in Risca, includes 45 one-bedroom flats.
A ceremony was held at the site on Monday March 2, where residents and guests were entertained by Risca Male Voice Choir. A commemorative plaque was also unveiled by Caerphilly Council leader Jamie Pritchard and Shayne Cook, the cabinet member for housing.
Cllr Pritchard said the development “represents a major step forward in how we support later living in Caerphilly County Borough”.
He added: “This flagship development shows our commitment to delivering high-quality, modern homes that promote independence while creating a strong sense of community.”
Meanwhile Cllr Cook, who is one of the council’s two deputy leaders, praised the “innovative scheme” and said it “sets a new standard for the council”.

He continued: “Seeing residents begin to move in this week is incredibly rewarding, and we’re proud to deliver a development that will make a real difference to people’s lives.
“There’s already a real buzz and sense of belonging here at Ty Darran. From naming the building to choosing colour schemes and being involved in key decisions, residents have played a central role at every stage of the journey. That involvement has helped shape not just a building, but a community.”
The former Ty Darran care home closed more than a decade ago, and was demolished in 2023, before construction work on the new apartments began the following year.
The council worked with construction firm Willmott Dixon to build the new development, which includes “spacious” apartments and lift access to all floors – and was built to the “highest levels of energy efficiency”.
