A Caerphilly man has become a World Record breaker after taking part in a marathon darts match.
Steve Davies, 40, and colleague Richie Williams, from Barry, played for 36 hours straight.
The duo, who both work in IT development at Principality Building Society, raised over £1,200 for the Wales Air Ambulance, the building society’s charity of the year.
Starting at 8am on Friday June 10 at Riley’s Snooker Hall in Cardiff, Richie and Steve played a total of 401 games and hit 19 ‘180s’.
Steve said: “That was a seriously long time, but I loved it all. It was Richie’s enthusiasm for the game and his ability to hit those doubles that kept me going. It was great to pass the previous record being cheered on by our friends and family and I’m really pleased with the amount of money we’ve managed to collect.”
Richie added: “I felt the challenge was going to be difficult but achievable, which proved to be correct. The whole event was enjoyable with the drive being a new World Record at the end.
“Mentally it was difficult especially at 5 o’clock in the morning knowing I had 15 hours more to go and physically there were some aches around the ankles and elbow but not enough to cause any issues.
“I found the best way to get through the marathon was to concentrate on each game played then re focus at the start of the next game, I also just tried to stay positive and concentrated on hitting big scores and not concern myself about the bad scores.
“The help and support from the people attending to watch was also hugely beneficial especially the witnesses through the night as they managed to keep our spirits up and keep us going.”
Both would like to thank Riley’s for letting them use their facilities and the large donation they gave to the Wales Air Ambulance charity.
