Councillors paid tribute to military servicemen and women on Monday by holding a special flag raising ceremony.
Held at Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters at Penallta House, veterans from the Royal British Legion and Comrades from The Royal Welsh were among the guests.
The Regimental Goat and a Flag Major from the Royal Welsh was also be present.
The ceremony, one of hundreds taking place across the UK, was held ahead of Saturday’s national Armed Forces Day.
Caerphilly County Borough Mayor Cllr Vera Jenkins said: “I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who turned up to help us mark the occasion. Armed Forces Day is an excellent annual opportunity to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and to show our support for all they do.
“It is wonderful to see from the number of people that came along to join us in marking this special day, that the Armed Forces community are held in such high regard by the people of Caerphilly county borough”.
Caerphilly’s Labour AM Jeff Cuthbert has urged people to get behind our troops and celebrate the day.
He said: “Armed Forces Day is an important opportunity to formally thank our service men and women and as a member of the Royal British Legion, this is a matter which I have always taken a keen interest in.
“All our armed forces members who have made great sacrifice to defend the UK and contributed to international peace keeping operations deserve to be recognised. The nation owes them all a debt of gratitude.”
