The new Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council has officially launched her charity appeal for the year.

Cllr Vera Jenkins announced that Llamau will benefit from fundraising activities during her year in office. Llamau is a charity that delivers services to socially excluded homeless and potentially homeless young people and vulnerable women in South Wales.

Over £2,200 was raised on the launch night which took place at Penallta House council offices in Ystrad Mynach.

Cllr Jenkins said: “I’m delighted to announce that Llamau is my chosen charity this year and I look forward to supporting their excellent work through my charity appeal.

“We will be organising a wide range of fundraising events and activities over the coming months and I hope local people will help me raise a record total for this worthwhile cause.

“I want to support the local community and it’s great to know that all the money raised will help local people in need.”

Frances Beecher, chief executive of Llamau welcomed the news.

She said: “We are delighted to be nominated as the Mayor’s charity appeal for 2011/12 and can assure Vera that this kind gesture will benefit many people who require support at a difficult time in their lives.

“We now look forward to working together to plan our fundraising activities and promote the work of Llamau across the region.”

If you would like to make a donation to the charity please contact Joy Thomas, the Mayor’s Assistant on 01443 864360.
