Council receives 1,800 calls about fortnightly bins

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Friday October 30th, 2009.

Caerphilly County Borough Council took more than 1,800 calls from confused residents on the first day of new bin collections.

On Monday fortnightly rubbish collections started throughout the county borough in a bid to cut down on the amount of waste sent to landfill and to encourage people to recycle more.

Residents now have to put recyclable waste in the brown bins and a new food waste collection also began.

Councillor Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment and housing said, “This is an enormous change to bring about and we are delighted the public are responding so well to the recycling challenges.

“Over 80,000 households are now able to recycle their rubbish at their doorstep. These two important changes to fortnightly collections and food waste collections will have a big impact on our recycling rates.

“We have been set tough targets by the Welsh Assembly Government and we need to take positive steps to increase the amount of waste we recycle, otherwise we face tough financial penalties in the future.”

The top three queries received on Monday were:

  • What day is my refuse, recycling, food waste caddy collection date?
  • Confirmation of days of collection
  • Ordering a brown binResidents should call 01443 866533 for any questions regarding the new rubbish collections.
