Gwent Police arrest third man over internet riot rumours

UPDDATE: Two further arrests by Gwent Police over social media riot rumour

A third man in the Gwent Police area has been arrested in connection with spreading riot rumours via social media.

Thursday’s arrest follows two by the force on Wednesday for similar offences.

Gwent Police has said it continues to monitor social media and networking sites.

In a statement it said: “The situation hasn’t changed in Gwent – communities in our force area haven’t experienced unrest like that seen in cities across the UK.

“We continue to urge members of the community to use social media responsibly and be careful not to add to the huge amount of rumour that has, inevitably, arisen.”

A 25-year-old man from the Chepstow area has been arrested on suspicion of intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of a public order offence. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

It follows the arrests on Wednesday of a 31-year-old Newport man, on suspicion of intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of a public order offence, and a 27-year-old Ebbw Vale man.

The Ebbw Vale man was cautioned for sending a malicious communication by public communication network while the Newport man was released on bail pending further enquiries.

Gwent Police has said officers will continue to make arrests if any criminal activity is identified.
