Eight arrests by Gwent Police over social media riot rumour

Gwent Police has made a total of eight arrests in connection with spreading riot rumours on the internet.

The arrests have taken place since Wednesday.

A 25-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of a burglary and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

A 20-year-old man from Newport and an 18-year-old male from the Gwent area arrested on suspicion of intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of a public order offence have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A 26-year-old man from Ebbw Vale and a 20-year-old man from Newport, who was arrested in the Bristol area, both arrested on suspicion of intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of a public order offence have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A 25-year-old man from the Chepstow area and a 31-year-old man from the Newport area were arrested on suspicion of intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of a public order offence. They have both been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A 27-year-old man from Ebbw Vale has been arrested and cautioned for sending a malicious communication by public communication network.

In a statement the force said: “The situation hasn’t changed in Gwent – communities in our force area haven’t experienced unrest like that seen in cities across the UK.

“We continue to urge members of the community to use social media responsibly and be careful not to add to the huge amount of rumour that has, inevitably, arisen.”
