Coleg Gwent students to fly the Welsh flag on China trip

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Thursday February 24th, 2011.

A group of Coleg Gwent students are to fly out to China to strengthen the Welsh relationship with the country.

The students will visit Chongqing as part of a skills exchange visit to develop further education links as part of the British Council Wales’ Skills for Employability Project.

Coleg Gwent will join the delegation of seven Welsh colleges including Coleg Glan Hafren, Gower College Swansea, Coleg Llandrillo Cymru, Pembrokeshire, Neath Port Talbot and Yale.

The trip will coincide with St David’s Day and two staff members, a beauty student and two motor vehicle students will be taking part in a week of cultural events.

Motor vehicle student Rhys Webb, 19 from Risca, is hoping to gain an insight into Chinese education and industry on the trip of a lifetime.

As the winner of the college’s Technical Certificate Student of the Year Award 2010, Rhys is working towards becoming a dealership Vehicle Technician.

He said: “I’m looking forward to experiencing the Chinese engineering college and working on an engine assembly with Chinese students.”

The college’s Head of School for Creative Industries Hayley Wilce said: “It’ll be fascinating to experience Chinese culture and also demonstrate the very best of Welsh skill and talent.

“Our students have achieved many individual successes whilst studying at the college and will be excellent ambassadors for Coleg Gwent and Wales.”
