A record £143,000 was handed out to Caerphilly businesses last month in the form of European Union backed grants.

Councillor Ron Davies revealed the figure during a business breakfast meeting on Wednesday at Tredomen Business and Technology Centre organised by the council’s Business Advisory Services team.

The money, paid out through the Local Investment Fund (LIF), offers local businesses the chance to claim 40% of the costs of purchases to improve their company.

Cllr Davies, cabinet member for regeneration and planning said: “It is very pleasing that eligible local businesses across our county borough are able to benefit from these financial assistance schemes, which can help towards the cost of items such as capital equipment, marketing and ICT, and I would encourage more business owners to get in touch to see what support is available to them.”

Since April last year, together with other grants available from the council totalling £600,000 , local businesses have invested £1.5 million.

Cllr Davies added: “This level of investment by businesses in our county borough, coupled with the fact that footfall figures have substantially increased in town centres across Caerphilly county borough compared to this time last year, is very pleasing indeed.”

Established businesses and start-ups are eligible for a wide range of support grants.
