The Bedwas play scheme has been a success

A summer play scheme for kids in Bedwas has been labelled a success.

The summer scheme has attracted high numbers of children from the area as well as Phillipstown, Lansbury Park and Graig Y Rhacca.

Organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s youth service and Bedwas Comprehensive School and funded by the Safer Caerphilly Community Safety Partnership, the summer scheme has seen youngsters take part in a wide range of activities this summer.

Cllr Lyn Ackerman, the council’s cabinet member for the environment, said: “Schemes such as this benefit the whole community, as they create a diversion from possible anti social behaviour which a small minority of people may choose to take part in.”

The young people have been taking part in activities such as arts and crafts, swimming and various sports.

The Bedwas Neighbourhood Policing Team has also paid visits to the scheme to help kids get to know their local bobby.

PC Stuart Lewis said: “We went along to the summer scheme on a few of the days to speak to young people from the area. It was a great opportunity to interact with them, and for them to get to know who their local officers are.”
