Caerphilly County Borough to tweet about its ‘typical’ day

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Wednesday October 5th, 2011.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has announced it will use social networking site Twitter to capture a ‘typical’ day in the life of the local authority.

Billed as ‘Caerphilly’s Big Tweet!’ the tweets will start at 6am on Thursday October 6 and will continue until 6am on Friday October 7.

Staff from all sections of Caerphilly Council will tweet what they are doing at a given points throughout the 24-hour period.

‘Caerphilly’s Big Tweet’ mirrors Greater Manchester Police when it used the social networking site to tweet all of the calls it received during a 24 hour period in October 2010.

Council leader Allan Pritchard said: “This innovative event promises to offer a unique snapshot of the huge range of services we provide 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“More and more people are using social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter and the council is keen to join in with the conversation. I’m looking forward to following the event throughout the day and will even be adding my own ‘tweet’ too.”

The 24 hour ‘tweetathon’ will start with the refuse and recycling teams as they begin their collection rounds, then the messages will roll in throughout the day from schools, leisure centres, residential homes, council offices, depots and from staff as they go about their duties across the county borough.

Oh dear… I would much rather see the drains work, the schools educate, the refuse dealt with, the traffic flow, the street lighting illuminate, the old cared for, the libraries to provide books and half a hundred other things that take precedence over this mindless tweeting. I really wonder what I pay council taxes for when rubbish like this appears.
