The Oakdale and Penmaen Community Partnership has been presented a prestigious award for developing an impressive green space in the heart of their community.
The Roger Lewis Woodland Garden in Oakdale was presented with a Green Pennant Award at a special ceremony in Bournemouth recently.
The garden was developed by the partnership as a result of a grant from the Forestry Commission Wales.
Oakdale Comprehensive School has also been involved in designing new gates for the garden, as well as major support coming from Groundwork Caerphilly.
The Green Pennant Award recognises the best community-run parks in the country.
The Roger Lewis Woodland Garden stood out after impressing the judges with excellent facilities including well-managed green spaces, signage and amenities as well as the dedication of the local people.
Partnership chairman Roger Evans said: “We were bowled over to receive this award as it was the first time we had entered and did not really know what standards were expected of our woodland.
“I hope it will encourage many other local groups who are working equally hard on similar projects in their communities.”
