Widen the winter fuel payment for the terminally ill says Islwyn MP

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Wednesday October 26th, 2011.

Islwyn MP Chris Evans has called on the Government to widen the winter fuel payment to prevent the terminally ill falling into fuel poverty.

Speaking in a Westminster Hall debate on Wednesday, Mr Evans urged the Government to do more to help cancer patients and other vulnerable groups struggling to pay fuel bills this winter.

Cancer patients are particularly vulnerable to plummeting temperatures and rocketing fuel bills. Many will be faced with fuel poverty because they often have increased energy needs at a time when their income has dropped dramatically.

Mr Evans said: “Faced with months of treatment, heartache and worry – the last thing any family with a cancer patient should worry about is whether or not they can pay their energy bills.

“The Government has to do more to target support to vulnerable groups and extending the winter fuel payment, to those with a terminal illness or undergoing treatment, would be a step in the right direction.”
