Caerphilly opera singer stuns Britain’s Got Talent judges

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:00, Friday April 30th, 2010.

A wannabe opera singer from Caerphilly has been wowing the judges of Britain’s Got Talent.

Antonio Garcia, 20, auditioned for the show in Glasgow and was derided by the judges when he told them he was a karaoke singer.

But they soon changed their minds when Antonio started singing Nella Fantasia, made famous by Russell Watson, and voted him through to the next round.

He told the South Wales Echo: “I turned up dressed casually in a T-shirt and jeans. Simon Cowell asked what I did for a living and I said ‘I’m just a karaoke singer, to be honest.’ Everyone started laughing at me. When I started singing opera the crowd was overwhelmed.

“I think it was because of the whole surprise with my act, no-one was expecting me to do that.

“They got behind me a lot and I had a standing ovation throughout the whole song.

“Piers Morgan said I reminded him of Susan Boyle for the way I fooled the audience. Amanda Holden said I was a really good performer for a boy that just sings karaoke.

“Simon Cowell said I had lots of potential to be a star in the future.”

His audition is due to be broadcast on Saturday.
