Gwent beauty stars clinch national prizes

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:44, Monday March 28th, 2011.

A trio of Coleg Gwent pupils have blow-dried, nail decorated and body-painted their way to national award.

Hair and beauty students Marija Habelasivili, Maddisson Whitehill and Helen Sara Basnett beat off opponents from across the UK to scoop the prizes at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists UK Trainee Competition in Blackpool.

They won third place in the first-year contest for work on a Circus theme. Marija won hers for blow-drying, Maddisson for nail art and Helen Sara for face and body painting.

Several of their college colleagues at the Crosskeys Campus also finished fourth in the Total Look Team Event.

Lecturer Maria Retter said: “It really was a fantastic opportunity for them to show their considerable talent within the hair and beauty industry and amongst their peers. I would like to thank all the competitors and models who took part; they were impeccable representatives of Coleg Gwent and did themselves proud in the competition.”
