Super-fast broadband arrives in Caerphilly

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:00, Tuesday June 8th, 2010.

BT has introduced super-fast broadband to Caerphilly.

The telecommunications firm has said the technology is now available to 17,000 Caerphilly homes and businesses.

The new fibre-based broadband network can enable download speeds of up to 40 megabits per second (Mbps).

The fastest speeds currently available are around 8Mbps.

Ann Beynon, BT director for Wales, said: “This is an exciting development for the Wales broadband story. Households and businesses in Caerphilly switching to super-fast broadband will soon be experiencing the internet as they have never experienced it before.”

Caerphilly MP Wayne David welcomed the introduction of super-fast broadband and said: “The arrival of super-fast broadband is a very important development for the town and it represents a significant investment in this area.”

The BT Superfast Broadband release in Caerphilly is farcical. Contrary to this article and BT press releases, it is not yet available. A presentation by BT earlier this year stated it would be avaible in March 2010, but that was moved to April, and subsequently June. I have called up my broadband provider every month to enquire. It is now July and they state it is still not available. I called BT and they also stated it is unavailable in Caerphilly. They then transferred me to India who at first had no idea what this was about, but then also stated the 40Mb service is not released.

So I have tried but failed to get a definitive statement from BT on this, but am led to believe by them that the above information is incorrect, it is not available yet.
