Jeff Cuthbert, Labour’s Assembly Member for Caerphilly, is urging people to drink responsibly during this summer’s football World Cup.

A recent study by Alcohol Concern reports that domestic abuse can increase as much as 40% during periods when major sporting events are held.

Alcohol Concern, a drink awareness charity, is encouraging responsible drinking, especially during the World Cup. It is estimated that an additional 21 million pints will be drunk during the four-week tournament

Mr Cuthbert, who is chairman of the Welsh Assembly’s Cross-Party Beer and Pub Group, said: “During times of big sporting events such as the World Cup, I want people to enjoy themselves.

“However, I also hope that people can be responsible – and that includes in terms of how much alcohol they drink.”
