Caerphilly event to raise awareness of elder abuse

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 21:08, Monday June 14th, 2010.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is holding a special open event on Tuesday to raise awareness about problems linked to abuse of the elderly.

The council’s Protection of Vulnerable Adults team is holding its third annual event to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.

This year the team, who have been commended in a recent Inspection report for their awareness-raising activities, is holding a special information event at the Twyn Hall in Caerphilly from 2pm to 4.30pm.

Councillor Judith Pritchard, cabinet member for social services, said: “It’s a sad fact that abuse against the elderly does happen, often by people that they know and trust.

“This event will be a good opportunity for us to engage the community and raise awareness about this important issue. Any form of abuse is a violation of our basic human rights, it’s only right that something is done to stop it.”

The event will include information stalls from the Protection of Vulnerable Adults Team, Gwent Police, Age Concern, Epilepsy Wales and many more.
