Cwmcarn baby found behind Spar was stillborn

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 20:24, Tuesday June 15th, 2010.

A baby boy found dead behind a local Spar shop was still born an inquest heard.

The newborn baby was found wrapped in a towel in a carrier bag, which was hanging on a gatepost, behind the Spar in a lane off Newport Road, in Cwmcarn, on March 18.

Named by police as Patrick, as he would have been born on St Patrick’s Day, the baby was taken to Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A woman had been arrested on suspicion of concealment of a birth and has been bailed pending further inquiries.

A post mortem examination by Home Office pathologist Dr Stephen Leadbeatter said there was no evidence to counter the mother’s claim during police interviews that the baby was stillborn.
