Gwent Police have stopped more than 5,000 motorists so far as part of a summer drink-drive blitz.

During the campaign 33 drivers have either returned a positive breathalyser result or have refused to provide a sample.

Chief Inspector John Pavett, Gwent Roads Policing, said: “In the summer many people take the opportunity to arrange parties and barbecues, especially when the sun is shining and social events or big sports matches are taking place – this year will be no exception.

“Our message remains clear, have fun, but if you are planning on having a drink do not get behind the wheel.

“There is no set amount of alcohol that can be legally consumed before driving and it definitely is not a risk worth taking.

“Officers will continue to be out on the roadside at all times of day; morning, noon and night and anyone who chooses to behave so irresponsibly can expect to be caught.”
