MP labels budget “bad for Caerphilly”

Caerphilly MP Wayne David.

Caerphilly Labour MP Wayne David has criticised the VAT increase and public sector cuts announced in yesterday’s budget.

He described the drastic measures unveiled by Conservative Chancellor George Osborne in Westminster as “bad for Caerphilly”.

Speaking after the announcements, Mr David said there would be a disproportionate impact on the borough because of its reliance on public sector jobs.

The budget included cuts to services and benefits, a public sector pay freeze and an increase in VAT from 17.5% to 20%.

Mr David said any Government reduction of funding to the Welsh Assembly Government would have a knock-on effect on Caerphilly County Borough Council, leading to job losses and poorer public services.

He added: “VAT is a regressive form of taxation. It hits those less able to pay far more than the well-off.

“The negative impact of VAT has been recognised by both the Lib Dems and the Conservatives, and yet they have still imposed this increase.”
