Ron Davies highlights Plaid’s record on Caerphilly Council

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:35, Monday April 4th, 2011.

Former Welsh Secretary and Caerphilly councillor Ron Davies has praised Plaid’s record in control of Caerphilly County Borough Council during a speech at the party’s Spring Conference in Cardiff.

The council cabinet member for regeneration and Plaid’s Caerphilly Assembly candidate also acknowledged council leader Lindsay Whittle for “dedicating his life to his community”.

Cllr Davies said: “Under his leadership Caerphilly stands comparison with any council in Wales. What a contrast between Plaid in action – getting on with the job of regenerating our communities, providing jobs and improving services and the Labour party sitting back, doing nothing but whingeing and moaning .

“Plaid in action in Caerphilly – right from the start we got to grips with the issues facing us.

“We know we will never get the vibrant and prosperous Wales we want to see unless we invest in better schools and drive up standards of literacy and other skills.

“And in Caerphilly we are pioneering Wales’ first programme, funded locally, to provide 100 new jobs and training for young people across the spectrum from traditional apprenticeships to graduate opportunities.

“We understand that as well as driving up standards of skills we have to create opportunities and drive up standards of ambition and enterprise. Across the board in Caerphilly we are showing it can be done.”

Cllr Davies highlighted the reduction of a £30m budget deficit, the regeneration of Bargoed and Caerphilly town centres and the creation of nine new school building projects and three new libraries as examples of Plaid’s success.
