Newbridge boxing legend Joe Calzaghe has been confirmed as a contestant on the new series of hit BBC1 show Strictly Come Dancing.

Calzaghe, who retired in February with an unbeaten record of 46 professional fights, will join celebrities such as former cricketer Phil Tufnell and former EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy in the show.

Joe said: “I agreed to take part in Strictly Come Dancing because it is a totally new challenge for me. Watching the show in the past, I have noticed how hard the celebrities have to train in order to reach the standards they attain on a Saturday night.

“I’m very scared about dancing in front of a live audience – it’s terrifying.

“I wanted to take part because I am a competitor, I like to keep in shape and the show has a good history of sportsmen doing well.

“I am proud to represent the fighter on the show and become the first boxer to take part in Strictly Come Dancing.”

Calzaghe will partner professional dancer Kristina Rihanoff in the competition.
