Cardiff City fans from Caerphilly area banned after fighting

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:48, Monday September 27th, 2010.

Five Cardiff City fans who clashed with Swindon Town supporters have been banned from football matches for five years.

The five fans, all from the Caerphilly area, were given football banning orders at Swindon Crown Court after fighting with rival Swindon Town FC fans on July 25 last year.

The court was told the fight started when a group of city supporters went into the town centre from a pub near the train station. They confronted a group of Swindon Town fans and a 15-minute riot ensued. CCTV evidence was shown to the court.

Dominic Towell, 28 of Castle Park, Caerphilly, Jordan Gurner, 19 of Glyn Collen, Llanbradach, Lee Evans, 27 of King Street Abertridwr, Michael Grainger, 22, of Tenby Court, Caerphilly, and Steven Harding, 28 of Wedgewood Court, Caerphilly, all pleaded guilty to affray.

The court was told that in interviews with police afterwards, the city fans had claimed they were defending themselves.
In addition to the bans, they were also each given 300 hours’ unpaid work.

Det Cons Liz Coles, from Swindon CID, said: “We will continue to clamp down on hooliganism like this to help ensure members of our communities and visitors alike can enjoy Swindon safely.”

Banning orders were also handed out to three other City fans and 10 Swindon Town fans.
