Caerphilly Council warns of tax scam calls

Residents across the Caerphilly County Borough are being warned to be vigilant after reports of scam telephone calls.

There have been two recent incidents of a telephone caller, claiming to be a verification officer from the local authority’s council tax department, contacting residents and telling them they have overpaid council tax.

The caller than asks for the residents’ bank details so they can claim the fake refund.

Fortunately, the residents were not convinced that it was a genuine call and informed the council immediately.

A council spokesman said: “We would encourage residents to ensure they know who they are dealing with over the telephone and not to give any details, especially bank details and personal information out unless they are completely sure that the caller is genuine.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council urges all residents be wary of any suspicious calls.
